Happy Spring, Everyone!

Spring Notes

daffodils_and_hyacinthThere is nothing like the renewal of new life in the spring.  It has been a warm winter making it feel as I write that summer is almost here.  This trend may be causing some of us to run a little hot, as well. Remember that in Ayurveda, "like increases like."  So, if it is unusually warm on the outside and you usually run a little warmer than most, this weather may aggravate the fire element within you.  This imbalance can be associated with increased increased irritability or anger and the tendancy to be judgmental and critical.  In addition, this underlying imbalance may result in skin conditions and other symptoms.

Food tastes that might be useful to balance the excess heat are bitter, astringent, and sweet.   In Ayurveda, sweet is not just "sugar" sweet.  There are sweet vegetables, grains, and fruits.  The best examples of bitter are in the green leafy vegetables category (e.g., kale, chard).  Beans, barley, rye, and millet are some astringent foods.  Don't engage in overheating activities, and avoid over indulgences -- including work!  Yes, overwork is an indulgence in Ayurveda.  For those of you who are not running too hot, the foods that would be balancing to the cool and damp of spring are bitter, astringent, and pungent (spicy).

Happy Mother's Day:  Please think of us when you are brainstorming that perfect give for your mom, the mother of your children (or pets!), grandmother, and Earth mother!  You may want to take advantage of Heather's intro special:  see below.  Mother's day is May 6 this year.  See our little write up on gift certificates.  There are links there to the bodywork page and services flyer.

Staff Changes:  Goodbye to Patti, Welcome Aboard Heather -- Intro Special

We are sad to report that Patti Winter, LMT, has left her position at the Ayurveda Center. She continues to work her main position at a spa in Knoxville; it was a little too much to work at both places.  For those of you who have outstanding gift certificates with Patti, she is willing to honor those as you book your appointment.        But whenever God closes a window ...an open door.  Heather0412

Heather Fraser, LMT, is joining the Ayurveda Center staff.  Heather is a graduate of Arbor Institute of Massage Therapy.  She has worked in the spa and salon industry for many years.  I can personally attest that she gives a great deep tissue massage, having had one myself last week.  For more on Heather, see the staff page.  Heather wants to invite you to try her out at a reduced rate.  She is giving $15 off your first massage through 6/30/2012.  Please call to set up an appointment 482-0981.

Spiritual Technology -- Deep PEAT

zivorad_slavinskyDeveloped and refined by Zivorad M Slavinsky, Spiritual Technology is a collection of methods, the goal of which is to develop spiritually. In the process, one also addresses emotional and even physical issues, as well. Thus it can be undertaken as a stand alone or as a part of a psychotherapy process. Slavinsky has authored many books that have been translated into several languages.

The theoretical background fits very nicely with Vedic philosophy in that examines how most of  us are caught up in a dualistic consciousness.  We spiritually long to transcend and move beyond that to a more unified state of consciousness in which one transcends the duality.  Slavinsky posits that each person comes into this life having a set of Primordial Polarities or Primes or Personal Codes that are unique.  We then spend our lives unconsiously moving from one polarity to the other.  Examples are love and hate, peace and fear, I and not-I, physical and spiritual, connected and disconnected.  Polarities are not always good and bad.  For example, one might have a polarity of love and freedom.

yin-yang-symbol

It's really much like the yin and yang symbol.  Yin is often described as female, dark, passive, cool.  Yang is the male aspect, light, active, warm.  As the symbol depicts, at the center of yin is yang and vice versa.  If one goes to one extreme of a polarity, one often finds the seeds of the of the other.  In the case of the last sample polarity, love and freedom. one unconsciously moves toward love.  Once there, a longing would begin for freedom.   We unconsciously choose people and situations in our lives to enact these polarities.
