On Going Classes

At this time, the Ayurveda Center offers four different ongoing classes: Svaroopa Yoga, Interdisciplinary Yoga, Qi Gong.

Svaroopa® Yoga
Serene writes, "Svaroopa® Yoga is a compassionate and gentle approach to the body. Whether a novice or experienced yoga student, physically fit, or struggling with health challenges, Svaroopa® Yoga offers profound changes in every lifestyle. Svaroopa® Yoga can be practiced by all, it uses classical yoga asanas (poses) to create a deep opening in the muscles around the spine, helping the whole body to relax and move more freely. In each class, your body is supported in poses that carefully and gradually release the deepest layers of tension in the body. The emphasis is on core opening, resulting in an overall feeling of well being, a reduction in muscular tension, and an openness and ease that permeates the whole body. By using precise alignments and meticulous placement of props, you experience calmness in your body and openness in your heart." All levels are welcome. If you want to read about Svaroopa yoga or our teacher, Serene White, log on to her web site at www.SereneYogaAndHealing.com . Feel free to telephone Serene if you have any questions: 789-9731. Or e-mail her at Serene108@comcast.net.

Thursdays, 5:30-6:45 PM (primary practice, introductory but all levels welcome)
Thursdays, 7:00-8:30 PM (continuing class, all levels)

Interdisciplinary Yoga
Aubrey Wick Sebastian, RYT, writes, "Interdisciplinary Yoga which incorporates warm up style exercises to prepare the body and mind to experience the classical asanas, or postures. The class emphasis lies in experiencing an opening of various regions of the body and melting away stress that is stored in our muscles and locked in our minds. By gradually building awareness of our bodies through gentle movement, breathing and stretching, we will prepare ourselves to experience the power of asana." Class rates are $100 for an 8-week series of classes; $15 for drop-in. You may join the classes at any time. Aubrey is currently on maternity leave, probably through late spring. Sherry Chobanian, RYT, will be taking over Aubrey’s Intermediate Level class while she is on leave.

Sherry obtained her original yoga certification training from the same teacher as Aubrey—Interdisciplinary Yoga. More recently Sherry completed a certification program in Integrative Yoga Therapy with Joseph Le Page. Pending the filing of paperwork, she will soon be certified at the 500-hour level by the Yoga Alliance.

Interdisciplinary Yoga - Intermediate Level: Wednesdays, 6-7:30 PM. This on-going series is open to all practitioners who have a good understanding of the classical yoga asanas. We will practice vinyasa, or flowing from one pose to the other, and we will explore more advanced asanas, including inverted poses.

Qi Gong Classes

Beginners Qi Gong and Tai Chi
Taught by Dean Nardii, these classes are designed to introduce new students to the practice of Soaring Crane Qi Gong and the fundamentals of Chen Style Tai Chi. Qi Gong draws from long historical roots as a method to restore and maintain holistic health, as well as improving quality and longevity of life. Soaring Crane Qi Gong is one of the most popular forms in China and is also one of the most effective forms of medical Qi Gong. The Five Routines of Soaring Crane are easy to learn. Students may notice changes in mind, body and spirit shortly after beginning practice. Students will also be introduced to Wu style Tai Chi practice as well.

On-going classes will meet on Thursdays from 12 to 1 PM. The class fee is $45 per month of classes. $15 for drop-in. You may join the class at any time. If you have any questions, feel free to call the Center (482-0981) or Dean Nardi (719-7689) or e-mail Dean at Dnardi@comcast.net.

About Dean Nardi and His Lineage of Teachers:

Dean Nardi is a student of Wang Hai-Jun of Henan Village, China. Wang Hai-Jun is a teacher and practitioner of Chen style Tai Chi at the highest level. He was the first non-Chen family student to be traditionally trained in Chen Village in Henan in modern times. His teacher, Chen Zheng-Lei, is one of the "Four Golden Tigers" of Chen style Tai Chi.

Wang Hai-Jun currently resides outside Manchester, England. He offers classes and workshops worldwide and has established a following of students in Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States. He has to his credit the training of many gold medalists, among both his Chinese and non-Chinese students.

He generously demonstrates the principles of Tai Chi, and engages in "hands-on" teaching. Since he is very committed to his students, he makes frequent trips to his various groups, and has established a system whereby appointed instructors maintain students' momentum between visits. He is a wonderful teacher and a great inspiration, and gives proof of what is possible with the highest quality instruction and diligent practice.

Wang has won the All-China martial arts championship for three years in succession and in three separate categories – forms, weapons skills and push hands. He visits the United States three times annually for a series of workshops and a summer camp. The Knoxville workshops are held each March and November at the Flying Dragon Martial Arts Center in Fountain City.

Dean has studied internal Chinese martial arts for seventeen years, the last six as a student of Wang Hai Jun. He teaches regular Chen Tai Chi classes at the Flying Dragon and also studies ba’gua with the center’s proprietor, Russell Sauls.
