  • Weevils represent one of the most speciose and economically important animal clades, but remain poorly studied across much of the Oriental Region. Here, an integrative revision of the Oriental, flightless genus Aphanerostethus Voss, 1957 (Curculionidae: Molytinae) based on X-ray microtomography, multi-gene DNA barcoding (CO1, Cytb, 16S), and traditional morphological techniques (light microscopy, dissections) is presented. Twelve new species, namely, A. armatus Lewis & Kojima, sp. nov., A. bifidus Kojima & Lewis, sp. nov., A. darlingi Lewis, sp. nov., A. decoratus Lewis & Kojima, sp. nov., A. falcatus Kojima, Lewis & Fujisawa, sp. nov., A. incurvatus Kojima & Lewis, sp. nov., A. japonicus Lewis & Kojima, sp. nov., A. magnus Lewis & Kojima, sp. nov., A. morimotoi Kojima & Lewis, sp. nov., A. nudus Lewis & Kojima, sp. nov., A. spinosus Lewis & Kojima, sp. nov., and A. taiwanus Lewis, Fujisawa & Kojima, sp. nov. are described from Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Malaysia. A neotype is designated for A. vannideki Voss, 1957. The hitherto monotypic genus Darumazo Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985, syn. nov. is synonymized under Aphanerostethus based on new morphological data and Aphanerostethus distinctus (Morimoto & Miyakawa, 1985), comb. nov. is transferred accordingly. X-ray microtomography is successfully used to explore for stable interspecific differences in cuticular, internal and micro morphology. Remarkable species-specific sexual d...

8. Cryptic evolved melts beneath monotonous basaltic shield ...

  • 28 jul 2020 · The western Galápagos Archipelago is an ideal location for studying compositionally monotonous volcanism because it hosts several volcanoes that ...

  • Many volcanoes erupt compositionally homogeneous magmas over timescales ranging from decades to millennia. This monotonous activity is thought to reflect a high degree of chemical homogeneity in their magmatic systems, leading to predictable eruptive behaviour. We combine petrological analyses of erupted crystals with new thermodynamic models to characterise the diversity of melts in magmatic systems beneath monotonous shield volcanoes in the Galápagos Archipelago (Wolf and Fernandina). In contrast with the uniform basaltic magmas erupted at the surface over long timescales, we find that the sub-volcanic systems contain extreme heterogeneity, with melts extending to rhyolitic compositions. Evolved melts are in low abundance and large volumes of basalt flushing through the crust from depth overprint their chemical signatures. This process will only maintain monotonous activity while the volume of melt entering the crust is high, raising the possibility of transitions to more silicic activity given a decrease in the crustal melt flux. In this study the authors show that monotonous basaltic volcanoes can host a range of melts in their sub-volcanic systems, extending to rhyolitic compositions. The study implies that volcanoes which have produced monotonous basaltic lavas on long timescales could transition to more explosive, silica-rich eruptions in the future.

  • Zika virus (ZIKV) emerged as a global epidemic in 2015–2016 from Latin America with its true geographical extent remaining unclear due to widely presumed underreporting. The identification of locations with potential and unknown spread of ZIKV is a key yet understudied component for outbreak preparedness. Here, we aim to identify locations at a high risk of cryptic ZIKV spread during 2015–2016 to further the understanding of the global ZIKV epidemiology, which is critical for the mitigation of the risk of future epidemics. We developed an importation simulation model to estimate the weekly number of ZIKV infections imported in each susceptible spatial unit (i.e. location that did not report any autochthonous Zika cases during 2015–2016), integrating epidemiological, demographic, and travel data as model inputs. Thereafter, a global risk model was applied to estimate the weekly ZIKV transmissibility during 2015–2016 for each location. Finally, we assessed the risk of onward ZIKV spread following importation in each susceptible spatial unit to identify locations with a high potential for cryptic ZIKV spread during 2015–2016. We have found 24 susceptible spatial units that were likely to have experienced cryptic ZIKV spread during 2015–2016, of which 10 continue to have a high risk estimate within a highly conservative scenario, namely, Luanda in Angola, Banten in Indonesia, Maharashtra in India, Lagos in Nigeria, Taiwan and Guangdong in China, Dakar in Senegal, Maputo in Mozamb...

  • Gonadal dysgenesis resulting in primary infertility is one of the most common features of Turner syndrome. There have been a number of cases described of pregnancy in 45,X subjects, but whether or not the fertility is associated with a 46,XX cell line in the germ cells is not known. We describe a 45,X/46,X,psu idic(Xq) female with normal fertility, in whom a cryptic 46,XX cell line was found in the germ cells.

  • Protein-protein interactions mediate most molecular processes in the cell, offering a significant opportunity to expand the set of known druggable targets. Unfortunately, targeting these interactions can be challenging due to their typically flat and featureless interaction surfaces, which often change as the complex forms. Such surface changes may reveal hidden (cryptic) druggable pockets. Here, we analyse a set of well-characterised protein-protein interactions harbouring cryptic pockets and investigate the predictive power of current computational methods. Based on our observations, we develop a new computational strategy, SWISH-X (SWISH Expanded), which combines the established cryptic pocket identification capabilities of SWISH with the rapid temperature range exploration of OPES MultiThermal. SWISH-X is able to reliably identify cryptic pockets at protein-protein interfaces while retaining its predictive power for revealing cryptic pockets in isolated proteins, such as TEM-1 β -lactamase. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

  • Five percent of patients with unexplained mental retardation have been attributed to cryptic unbalanced subtelomeric rearrangements. Half of these affected individuals have inherited the rearrangement from a parent who is a carrier for a balanced translocation. However, the frequency of carriers for cryptic balanced translocations is unknown. To determine this frequency, 565 phenotypically normal unrelated individuals were examined for balanced subtelomeric rearrangements using Fluorescent In Situ hybridization (FISH) probes for all subtelomere regions. While no balanced subtelomeric rearrangements were identified, three females in this study were determined to be mosaic for the X chromosome. Mosaicism for XXX cell lines were observed in the lymphocyte cultures of 3 in 379 women (0.8%), which is a higher frequency than the 1 in 1000 (0.1%) reported for sex chromosome aneuploidies. Our findings suggest that numerical abnormalities of the X chromosome are more common in females than previously reported. Based on a review of the literature, the incidence of cryptic translocation carriers is estimated to be approximately 1/8,000, more than ten-fold higher than the frequency of visible reciprocal translocations.
